Mixed Paper Waste Density Calculation

Mixed paper is a broad category that often includes items such as discarded mail, telephone books, paperboard, magazines, cardboard, and catalogs. This article explains how the density of mixed paper waste is calculated within the Superfy platform.

The Superfy platform includes a set of 10 standardized common waste categories, each accompanied by standardized density values.

The density value for Mixed Paper Waste is an estimate based on various research conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This information aids customers in estimating and reporting on paper and cardboard volumes, facilitating effective waste management planning.

While customers can input their own waste density, the provided estimate can be used when data is unavailable. Additionally, the platform allows for the addition of unlimited custom waste types.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency defines mixed paper as a broad category that often includes items such as discarded mail, telephone books, paperboard, magazines, cardboard, and catalogs.

According to the RecycleMania Volume-To-Weight Conversion Chart published by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency, the estimated weight of mixed paper is 484lbs/cy which converts to 0.29kg/L

A separate report from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, titled Volume-to-Weight Conversion Factors (April 2016), provides updates to the conversion factors found in the 1997 report. This document estimates the weight of mixed office paper to range between 110–380 lbs/cy. Using the higher value of 380 lbs/cy, this converts to 0.23 kg/L.

Additionally, another report from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, titled Standard Volume-to-Weight Conversion Factors, lists the weight as 363.5 lbs/cy, which converts to 0.22 kg/L. For consistency, we have decided to use the higher density value of 0.29 kg/L on the platform.

The table below presents the density values for Mixed Paper across the various metrics available on the Superfy platform.

A European Waste Catalogue (EWC) Code is a six-digit code used to identify waste as listed in the European Waste Catalogue. It is formatted as three pairs of numbers, for example, 12 34 56. It identifies and classifies waste into categories according to how these wastes have been produced. It adequately describes the waste being transported, handled,d or treated. It can also be referred to as a LoW Code (List of Waste Code).

The European Waste Catalogue (EWC) Codes for Textiles is 20 01 01.
