Mixed Textiles Waste Density Calculation

Textile waste is discarded fabric or clothing unfit for its original purpose. This article explains how the density of mixed textiles waste is calculated within the Superfy platform.

The Superfy platform includes a set of 10 standardised common waste categories, each accompanied by standardised density values.

The estimated density value for Mixed Textiles is an estimate based on research conducted by the Blue Environment, the Queensland Government, the University of Northern Iowa, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This information aids customers in estimating and reporting on Mixed Textile volumes, facilitating effective waste management planning.

While customers can input their own waste density, the provided estimate can be used when data is unavailable. Additionally, the platform allows for the addition of unlimited custom waste types.

The MDPI publication titled State of the Art in Textile Waste Management: A Review, defines, Textile waste as discarded fabric or clothing unfit for its original purpose

According to the Blue Environment report titled, Australian standard for waste and resource recovery data and reporting and the Queensland Government,  the estimated weight density for mixed textiles is 0.15 t/m3 which converts to 0.15 kg/L.

Similarly, at the University of Northern Iowa, the estimated weight of loose textiles is 240 lbs per cubic yard (cy). This converts to 0.14 kg/L which is close to the 0.15 kg/L reported by Blue Environment.

Lastly, a report by the  U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, titled Volume-to-Weight Conversion Factors explains that loose mixed textiles weigh somewhere between 125-175 lbs/cy. Using the higher value of 175 lbs/cy, this converts to 0.10 kg/L. For consistency across our platform, we have chosen to adopt the 0.15 kg/L value reported by Blue Environment and Queensland Government.

The table below presents the density values for Mixed Textiles across the various metrics available on the Superfy platform.

A European Waste Catalogue (EWC) Code is a six-digit code used to identify waste as listed in the European Waste Catalogue. It is formatted as three pairs of numbers, for example, 12 34 56. It identifies and classifies waste into categories according to how these wastes have been produced. It adequately describes the waste being transported, handled or treated. It can also be referred to as a LoW Code (List of Waste Code).

The European Waste Catalogue (EWC) Codes for Textiles is 20 01 11
